Man killed in Dayton fire identified

DAYTON — A man killed in a house fire on Xenia Avenue Wednesday has been identified.

James R. Hall, 50, of Dayton, died following the fire, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

Fire crews responded to a report of a structure fire in the 100 block of Xenia Ave. at 4:12 p.m., according to a release from the fire department.

When firefighters arrived on scene at 4:15 p.m., they found a 2-story house with heavy fire conditions showing from the first floor and a report of a person possibly still inside.

Fire crews immediately made entry into the house to search for occupants and control the fire. Crews located one victim on the first floor, the release said.

The victim, who fire crews said was a man with a disability, was removed from the house but later died from his injuries.

The man was reported to have been struggling to get out of the house, and neighbors tried to help him out, firefighters confirmed.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury on scene.

A family of four lived in the house, but no other injuries were reported.

Fire spread throughout several sections of the second floor and attic, and the home sustained significant damage, the fire department said.

The Red Cross is providing assistance to other occupants displaced from the residence.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

This marks the second fire fatality in the City of Dayton in 2022.
