DAYTON — A new study shows Ohioans need to get more sleep, ranking the state fifth in the country for the lowest amount of sleep.
Research done by Mattressinsider.com shows 40 percent of Ohio residents get less than seven hours of sleep a night.

“Research has revealed that getting less than seven hours of sleep a night is linked to poor health such as weight gain, increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and depression. Getting 7 hours or over on a regular basis results in better cognitive abilities and a lower risk of health concerns,” according to a spokesperson from Mattress Insider.

The study looked into the eleven worst states for sleep in America.
- Hawaii ranks as the state getting the least amount of sleep as 43.2 percent of adults report getting less than seven hours.
- West Virginia comes in second with 42.5 percent of adults getting less than seven hours of sleep.
- Our sister state Kentucky ranked as the third state who gets the least sleep with 42.1 percent of adults getting less than seven hours of sleep.
- Tennessee is the fourth worst state for sleep as 40.8 percent of adults get less than seven hours.
- Ohio ranks fifth in the nation for the least amount of sleep with 40.6 percent of adults not getting enough sleep.
- Michigan comes in sixth, with 40.4 percent of adults getting fewer than seven hours of sleep per night on average.
- Alabama ranks as the state with the seventh-highest number of residents getting less than seven hours of sleep at an average of 39.6 percent.
- Coming in eighth is New York, with 38.9 percent of residents getting less than seven hours of sleep.
- 38.8 percent of residents in South Carolina have reported a sleeping duration of fewer than seven hours.
- Pennsylvania and Virginia place joint tenth, with 38.6 percent of residents getting less than seven hours of sleep.
