Expert says an important ingredient is missing in most aloe vera products

As temperatures increase and the sun shows itself; before you know it, it’ll be sunny enough to get a sunburn here in Ohio.

Some stores have already started putting out sunscreen and beach towels in preparation for the weather change.

Aloe is one summer item that was in short supply a year ago due to being an ingredient in hand sanitizer.

Desert Harvest CEO Heather Florio says it doesn’t look like there will be a shortage this year.

However, some products that advertise that they contain aloe vera, actually don’t have the ingredient in them.

“Aloe is 95% water, so first and foremost, you can get a product that is 95% water and very little aloe in there,” said Florio.

Aloe is great for the skin and is used many times on things like sunburn.

“Aloe vera is an anti-inflammatory and analgesic,” Florio says, “When you rub it on sunburn, it starts to reduce that redness, that is because of the high nutrient content and anti-inflammatory and analgesic.”

Florio says it’s difficult to tell whether a product contains the nutritious parts of the aloe plant. It’s even harder to tell if a product contains a sugar substitute that mimics aloe vera.

She went on to say, “They did a study with Bloomberg in 2016 and they tested a whole bunch at Target, CVS, Walgreens and they found there was actually no aloe vera in the gel they tested…”

One option you can use is you can grow an aloe plant, they’re very easy to take care of, I’ve kept this one alive for more than a year, and when you have a sunburn, and you need some aloe, you can just cut a piece off, and you can put it in lotion or keep it in the fridge and then you know you’re getting the aloe that you need.
