Cedarville student, volunteers makeover childcare room at treatment center

Rachel Nesmith and volunteers decorate treatment center room

SPRINGFIELD — What started as a dream turned into a reality Saturday afternoon for one Cedarville university student with a passion to help those in recovery.

Rachel Nesmith, a junior social work major at Cedarville University, led the remodel of the children’s care room at McKinley Hall.

McKinley Hall is a private, non-profit drug addiction recovery treatment center in Springfield.

“I just really wanted to make sure that they had everything they needed so they could keep doing the good work that they’re doing,” Nesmith said.

The facility has a children’s room where kids can play while their parents receive substance abuse treatment.

McKinley thought it could with a little bit of sprucing up.

With the permission of McKinley of Chief Executive Officer Wendy Doolittle, McKinley and a few other Cedarville students got to work.

“We went to the local Sherwin Williams down on Main Street and [they] donated not only all of the paint, but also all of the painting supplies.”

Thanks to other donations the team was able to purchase new bookshelves, books and toys for the room.

“The opportunity opened up and we’re just really thrilled that the way the community has come around and helped us,” McKinley said.
