BUTLER COUNTY — A quick response from a Butler County deputy on a routine patrol saved the life of a puppy this week.

On Wednesday, a German Shepherd puppy as chasing ducks on a pond in Liberty Township when the ice broke, causing him to fall into the pond roughly 8 feet from the edge.

Sheriff Richard Jones said Friday that Deputy Evan Depew, who is a member of the Emergency Response Services, “used a throw bag to lasso the dog and pull him to safety.”

The puppy was immediately wrapped in an emergency blanket and was reunited with his owner.

“Quick response with the knowledge, skills and equipment to make a difference,” Jones said in a statement.
