Woman accused of assaulting children with hammer, broom

TROTWOOD — UPDATE @ 1:56 p.m. (Feb. 28):

A Trotwood woman accused of assaulting children with a hammer and other household items was sentenced to five years probation Wednesday.

Josie Coleman was sentenced to five years of intensive community control sanctions, according to a Montgomery County court official.

If she violates the terms of her probation, she face a total 72 months in jail — 36 months for each count of endangering children.

A no contact order was also issued between Coleman and the children and a Children Services case was opened.

UPDATE @ 10:33 a.m. (Feb. 13):

The sentencing of a Trotwood woman accused of assaulting two children with household items — including a hammer and bug spray — has been delayed.

Judge Barbara Gorman delayed the sentencing of Josie Coleman for two weeks because she wanted to see a report from children services first.

Coleman’s lawyer asked that she be on house arrest during those two weeks, but Gorman denied the request.

INITIAL REPORT:

A Trotwood woman accused of beating two children with household items is being sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to charges earlier this month.

Josie J. Coleman, 40, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of endangering children (torture) on Feb. 1, according to Montgomery County court records.

She was accused of assaulting a 19-year-old woman with special needs and an 11-year-old with a hammer, broom, extension cord and a vacuum cleaner hose between June 1 and Oct. 1.

Coleman reportedly also sprayed one of the victims in the face with bug spray and cut one of them.

She was indicted on two counts of felonious assault and one misdemeanor count of child endangering in October, but the charges were dropped as part of a plea deal.
