Cattle killed, barn destroyed by fire in Wayne County

WAYNE COUNTY, Ind. — High winds made extinguishing a barn fire difficult for firefighters early Wednesday morning.

A large barn at Gerber Land and Cattle near Richmond Municipal Airport was destroyed by the fire, according to fire officials.

The fire was reported just before 4 a.m. and was fully engulfed in flames when crews first arrived at the scene, Joe Buckler, Fire Chief of the Boston Community Fire Department said.

Firefighters are making sure the fire doesn’t spread to neighboring structures and will allow the barn and hay inside to burn itself out, Buckler said.

Several cattle in the barn died in the fire, but an estimate of how many perished was not available.

The cause of the blaze is unknown and is under investigation.
