WHIO-TV receives 3 regional EMMYs®, including Overall Excellence

MIAMI VALLEY — The Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has awarded WHIO-TV three regional EMMY® Awards, including the four-state region’s top two awards: Overall Excellence and News Excellence.

News Center 7′s breaking news coverage of the Oregon District Mass Shooting was also awarded a regional EMMY® award.

In accepting the News Excellence award, on behalf of the entire WHIO-TV news team, News Director Caryn Golden paid homage to the Dayton area communities meeting the challenges of 2019, including the mass shooting and Memorial Day tornadoes.

“I’m proud of this team for being there and delivering the critical public safety information our community needed in these difficult times,” Golden said.

Among the major 2019 news events News Center 7 was also recognized for its' coverage of Dayton Police Detective Jorge DelRio, killed in the line of duty, two citywide water crises, the largest political corruption probe in Dayton city history, and a white supremacist group holding a national protest.

In addition to being one of Dayton’s most challenging years, 2019 was also the year WHIO-TV celebrated 70 years as the Miami Valley’s first television station, which has been the area’s leading source for breaking news, weather, investigations, and technology innovations for seven decades.

“Broadcasting is a team effort and our CMG Ohio our team is full of passionate, dedicated and professional broadcasters and every one of them worked incredibly hard to protect, inform and help heal the Dayton region after the May tornados, the horrible August mass shooting, and the demand for social changes in our streets,” General Manager Rob Rohr added, as he accepted the Overall Excellence Award on behalf off all WHIO-TV station employees.

In addition to the three wins, WHIO veteran anchor Cheryl McHenry and Chief Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs were each nominated for best news anchor and best weather anchor awards. Countless viewers have credited Vrydaghs and McHenry for saving their lives during the Memorial Day tornado outbreak.

The regional EMMY® for breaking news of the Oregon District Mass Shooting was awarded to McHenry, along with Managing Editor Quincy Wallace, Executive Producer Matthew Simon, and News Producer Emily Gay.

News Center 7′s Molly Koweek, along with the I-Team’s Executive Producer Matthew Simon and Photojournalist Mike Burianek, were nominated for their investigative work on former Springboro physical education teacher Austin Hopkin’s case.

Throughout 2019, WHIO-TV provided in-depth breaking news, weather, sports, and investigative coverage. Our 2019 investigations uncovered and exposed loopholes impacting veterans, children, schools, and public safety. We also celebrated our community’s triumphs, profiling those making a difference. Sports Director Mike Hartsock even celebrated 30 years of in-depth local high school football coverage.
