UPDATE: Tipp City factory isolates, replaces device following noise complaints from neighbors

MONROE TWP. — UPDATE @ 12:40 p.m. (Aug. 7): Following neighbor complaints of noise coming from the Abbott facility in Tipp City, the company said it has isolated and replaced what they believe was the root cause of the complaints, according to an Abbott spokesperson.

The spokesperson said the company launched an immediate investigation after they were notified of the noise concerns.

“After a sound audit determined that a common equipment safety alert was the likely root cause, we replaced the system with a quieter alternative and continue to work actively with the residents on a border sound reduction remedy,” the spokesperson said in a emailed statement.

FIRST REPORT (Aug. 6):

A Miami County woman has started an online petition complaining about the noise coming from the Abbott facility in Tipp City.

Alexandria McAdams’ home sits right on the edge of Monroe Twp. and Tipp City. Entering her neighborhood, you see a sign about a noise ordinance. But she says just across Kerr Road, the noise has been a problem.

“These noises that are coming from the facility happen at midnight, 2 a.m., 4 a.m., 6 a.m.,” McAdams said. “It’s waking people up from sleep, making people not be able to fall asleep.”

She’s talked to and heard from several of her neighbors who say similar things about the noise being a problem at all hours of the day.

The Abbott facility is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Neighbors say it’s primarily the sound of trucks backing up that is a problem but there are several other noises that are problematic. While McAdams said the noises aren’t nearly as bad during the day when more is going on, but the noise is most problematic at night.

McAdams and her neighbors have discussed several possibilities to help alleviate the situation. But there’s one that would be the most ideal for them: “Putting in a hill with trees would give us that township feel back.”

She said, “It would give us the peaceful look that we’re looking for. The trees would also bounce the sound off and drown all of that out and decrease not only the sound but the light that comes from that facility.”

News Center 7 did reach out to Abbott and left a request for comment. McAdams did say said she was very encouraged after speaking to someone at Abbott in human resources.

“Actually the response was really great. They have been open to solutions. They didn’t know that this was a problem until we wrote the petition and kind of started making some noise about it,” she said.

Their concern for a solution is also elevated because Meijer is building a warehouse close by as well. So they hope there’s a solution that can be put in place rather than exacerbating the problem.
