We have just passed the 30th anniversary of the coldest day on record, which had an average temperature for the day of minus 17.5 degrees.
Shortly after midnight Jan. 20, 1985, Dayton saw a high of minus 11 degrees. Temperatures fell through the morning, reaching a low of minus 24 degrees with wind chill values at 53 degrees below zero.
During daylight hours, temperatures never rose above minus 16 degrees, with a brutally cold arctic air mass over the region.
This record setting coldest high temperature has a significant lead, with the second coldest high coming in at minus 6 degrees.
