Crews responded to the Meadow Ridge apartment complex on Aster Park Drive on reports of a fire around 12:20 p.m. Saturday, our news partner WCPO in Cincinnati reports.

When they arrived, they found smoke coming from the door and windows of the apartment.

Four children were rescued from the building and taken to the hospital in critical condition and saved from fire crews within eight minutes of their arrival, West Chester Fire Chief Rick Prinz tells WCPO.

“(They) did everything humanly possible within their training,” he said.

Four-year-old Bryson Brooks and two-year-old Alaiya Encarnacion succumbed to their injuries.

Two other children, a nine-month-old and six-year-old, are still in the hospital, WCPO reports.

The nine-month-old underwent, “a neurological assessment,” Wednesday, according to WCPO.

The six-year-old child is expected to be release from the hospital soon, West Chester fire officials told WCPO.

The fire started in the bedroom, no adults were home at the time it started and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
