New technology leads to new way of sending greeting cards during pandemic

DAYTON, Ohio — For months, we’ve been using social media, Zoom, Facetime, whatever we can to safely connect with family and friends, but now a company called GiftGoat has found a new, yet old-school way to connect with loved ones.

Steven Gurley, co-founder of GiftGoat, said, “There’s many ways to connect with people. You can text, you can DM on social media, but when you can’t really get together s you normal would.”

With the current stay at home advisories in place, Gurley said she knew he needed to find a way to better connect with his family.

“Some of your older relatives, the only real outside experience they’re getting is to the mailbox,” Gurley said. So, he decided to make that one task, a little more exciting.

Gurley commented, “Most people when they go out to their mailbox, because we have become such a digital society, most people are expecting to get a bill, to get an ad, and when they see an envelope and its handwritten on the outside, and they open it up and it’s a heartfelt or meaningful message from someone, with a physical photo, something you can put up on the mantel, or in a frame, it does change ones day.”

To send a normal card, you would have to go to the store to buy one, which can put people at risk of catching COVID-19. With GiftGoat, you don’t have to leave your house to send a card.

“It does keep you safe,” Gurley said.

You can visit the GiftGoat website, browse through the cards for all occasions, birthdays, Christmas, New Year’s, Mother’s Day, whatever you want, personalize it however you want. You can even add a gift card to send too.

Gurley said, “Actual robots use physical ink pens and actually writes the cards for you.”

Right now, there are several different handwritings you can choose from for your card. According to Gurley, they are working on a new technology that would allow you to handwrite a letter, upload it on to the GiftGoat website and then a robot would write a card of your choosing in your handwriting.
