Pentagon confirms second spy balloon crossing over Latin America

WASHINGTON D.C. — The Pentagon said Friday evening that another Chinese spy balloon is currently “transiting Latin America,” according to a Pentagon spokesperson.

“We are seeing reports of a balloon transiting Latin America,” said press secretary Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, in a statement to CNN, Fox News and CBS News Friday night. “We now assess it is another Chinese surveillance balloon.”

The Pentagon acknowledged those reports, according to the Associated Press.

It is unclear exactly where the balloon is over Latin America, the spokesperson said.

A U.S. official tells CNN is does not appear to be currently heading to the United States.

Pentagon officials on Friday reiterated that the Chinese balloon being tracked over the U.S. is “a surveillance balloon” after Chinese officials earlier called it a “civilian airship” used for research.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken abruptly canceled a high-stakes Beijing trip aimed at easing U.S.-China tensions.
