WASHINGTON TWP., Montgomery County — A man involved in a standoff for more than eight hours with local and federal law enforcement at a Motel 6 earlier this week was previously convicted of a violent crime in Lake County, Florida, according to court records.

Kurt Denton Crouch, 48, is charged in U.S. District Court for assault on a federal task force officer with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence and having a firearm while being a convicted felon, a criminal complaint read.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies responded around 11:30 p.m. Monday to the motel on Miamisburg-Centerville Road after a 911 caller reported two shots were fired from a motel room.

After deputies arrived, they saw Crouch “exit the room and then run back inside,” the complaint read.

While trying to make contact with Crouch, deputies found suspected bullet holes in the motel room. Also, deputies were alerted to Crouch possibly having several weapons inside the room.

Crouch, who was convicted in 2006 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Florida, also has a pending weapons case stemming from a Nov. 30 incident in Miami Twp. for which Crouch on Wednesday entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, court records show.

The Montgomery County SWAT team and members of the FBI Safe Streets Task Force responded to the motel and attempting to convince Crouch to come out of the room.

Around 4:15 a.m., 0fficers deployed less lethal bean bag rounds into the motel room through a window.

“Following the bean bag rounds being deployed through the window ... law enforcement heard what sounded like a gunshot inside,” court records read.

After an FBI task force officer fired a round into the room, “he and other law enforcement officers immediately heard three gunshots come from (the room).”

Investigators found three additional bullet holes in one of the windows and appeared to have been directed in the area of the FBI officer, the court documents read.

Around 8 a.m. Crouch was taken into custody after officers fired gas into the room.

Investigators found a Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle, two loaded rifle magazines and a loaded 9mm Glock magazine inside the room.  They also found spent casings in the room.

Crouch remained in the Montgomery County Jail Thursday awaiting a Feb. 4 detention hearing in federal court.
