As reported on News Center 7 at 6:00, Dayton police asked Ohio BCI to investigate after someone made possible criminal accusations against the detectives.

Prosecutors asked Butler County prosecutors to review charges to avoid conflicts of interest.

News Center 7’s Mike Campbell obtained a letter from the Butler County prosecutors closing their review, which indicates the detectives faced theft accusations.

As previously reported by News Center 7, the investigation began in August of 2024 after almost 10 detectives were placed on restricted duty status and in “non-enforcement roles.”

The investigation closing letter said the detectives faced “allegations of theft during the execution of search warrants.”

Specifically, it included allegations of missing alcohol from a Dec. 14, 2023, search on Needmore Road.

Additional accusations of missing fireworks from a search on Ashwood Avenue on Jan. 30, 2024, and missing gaming systems from a search on Gander Road on Feb. 7, 2024, were also listed.

“It was pretty clear that there didn’t seem to be much merit to the allegations that were put forward,” Kyle Thomas, president of the FOP Local 44, said.

Thomas told News Center 7 in August 2024 that he believed the detectives would be cleared.

However, he isn’t happy that the BCI investigation and review from special prosecutors dragged on for so long.

“Throughout the investigation, Special Prosecutors have been unable to find sufficient corroboration to support the allegations made,” Butler County prosecutors said.

“So, we’re relieved to have all that lifted and to show the men and women that work here are doing what they’re supposed to do,” Thomas said.

The letter News Center 7’s Mike Campbell obtained from the Butler County Special Investigators, which was sent to the Montgomery County Prosecutor, said the investigation has been finished and the matter is closed.
