Renting a home in Bellbrook? Be sure to know your prospective landlord

The Bellbrook Police Department has become aware of two frauds, both listing homes for “rent” in Bellbrook that actually were for sale by a Realtor or for rent by another owner.

The catch is that the homes are listed for an attractive rental price that’s “too good to be true.”

Scammers will attempt to “rent” the property to you by creating a false internet ad, then pressuring you by collecting security deposits and rent in advance, all while managing the paperwork/lease by emails.

To protect yourself from property scammers:

  • Know your prospective landlord: Ask to see the property in person and meet the company or landlord you'll be renting from and ask to see their credentials
  • Don't get pressured into wiring or sending cash deposits before you see the property in an effort to secure a home; if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is
  • Don't sign a lease for the property before you see it in person
  • Consider using a licensed real estate professional to help you in your rental home search
