Pigs killed, barn destroyed in dairy farm fire

Several pigs were killed and a barn destroyed in a fire on the Gehret family dairy farm on Gehret Road near Fort Loramie this morning, firefighters said.

The fire, which required the help of firefighters from four different counties, was reported around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and crews cleared the scene shortly before 7 a.m. this morning.

A storage barn on the property was engulfed in fire when the first emergency crews arrived at the farm in the 9200 block of Gehret, Ft. Loramie Fire Chief Brad Schulze said.

Firefighters contained the fire to the one barn and no other structures were damaged on the property.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters believe the fire started in the corner of the barn, but an official cause has not been determined, Schulze said.

Farm equipment, hay and some feed was also lost in the fire, which firefighters believe will have damage totaling at least $100 thousand, Schulze said.

Schulze said the cows from the dairy farm were being housed in a nearby barn and were not injured.

The fire remains under investigation and the State Fire Marshal's Office will be investigating at the scene this morning.
