Memorial Day Tornado survivor on losing home, rebuilding new life

MONTGOMERY COUNTY — On Memorial Day 2019 multiple tornadoes hit part of the region.

The worst of the multiple tornadoes, an EF4, touched down in Brookville and stayed on the ground for 30 minutes.

It left a 20-mile path of destruction from Brookville through Trotwood, Dayton and Riverside.

One woman was just able to get back into her home within the past week.

Christine Creager’s home was severely damaged as the tornado came through part of Old North Dayton.

Drone video of the scene showed the roof of her house pealing away exposing the inside.

It took almost two years for it to be rebuilt from the ground up.

Last January Creager finally got the keys to her new home.

Creager said her family is doing better in the years since, and never lost hope.

“It was unbelievable that that happened, we weren’t expecting a brand new house out of this,” Creager said.

She said the neighborhood has been improved with the new houses since the tornadoes.

Many neighbors were able to improve their houses due to insurance policies and crews demolished severely damaged houses that sat in the neighborhood, Creager said.
