Man airlifted to hospital after barricading, shooting himself in Darke County church

Greenville — Darke County Sheriff’s Office received information of a man armed with a rifle at the Greenville Baptist Temple on the 4000 block of Children’s Home-Bradford Road Monday evening.

Mark Whittaker, Chief Deputy of the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, said that a 25-year-old man showed up with an AR-15 threatening to kill himself and that there were people inside of the church.

The four to five people inside of the church at the time were able to barricade themselves and were eventually escorted out of the church safely by deputies.

Whittaker said they then secured the area and began to negotiate with the man for several hours while he was barricaded inside of the church.

After several hours, the man shot himself and was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital, said Whittaker.

The man’s current condition is unknown at this time.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

The investigation is continuing into the circumstances of what caused the man to do this.
