Man accused of killing homeless man in Dayton

DAYTON — The Montgomery County Grand Jury has indicted a Dayton man on counts in connection to the shooting death of a homeless man in the area of Salem and Lexington Avenues, Prospecting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. announced.

Donnie Tunstall, 45, of Dayton, is accused of shooting Daniel Burch, a homeless man, on the evening of June 22, 2021.

Dayton Police were dispatched to a reported shooting in the area of the BP gas station at 500 Salem Avenue on the evening of June 22. At about the same time, police were also dispatched to the report of a shooting victim located in the area of 22 Lexington Avenue.

The victim, later identified as Burch, was transported to Miami Valley Hospital where he died from his injuries about two hours later, according to Heck.

Police were given a description of the suspect by multiple witnesses. The suspect, Tunstall, was located in an alley in the 200 block of Lexington Avenue.

Tunstall has been charged with:

  • Two counts of Murder
  • Two counts of Felonious Assault
  • One count of Carrying Concealed Weapons
  • One count of Obstructing Official Business
  • One count of Having Weapons While Under Disability – Prior offense of violence

Tunstall is being held on $1 million bond, in the custody of the Montgomery County Jail. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at 8:30 a.m.
