Mad River Mountain to open Saturday

UPDATE @ 12:34 p.m. (Jan 1):

Mad River Mountain announced it will open on Saturday at noon with limited lifts and trails open for skiing and snowboarding, according to the ski resort’s website.

The slopes will remain open until 2 a.m. for Midnight Madness.

The following lifts will be in operation:

  • Sundowner Lift
  • Flight Deck
  • Discovery Handle Tow

The following trails will be open:

  • Sundowner
  • L.V.L.P.
  • Discovery Hill Learning Area

The Avalanche Tubing Park is expected to remain closed this weekend and officials are hoping to open that section of the resort on Jan. 7, weather depending.

INITIAL REPORT (Dec. 30):

Mad River Mountain could be open as soon as Saturday if weather cooperates and the ski destination can make snow this week.

According to General Manager Tom Price, the ski resort will resume making snow at the location tonight since temperatures have fallen low enough to allow for the snow making machines to operate.

“We hope to have five to six days of good snow making,” Price said.

While Saturday is the target date for Mad River Mountain to open for the season, Price said an official opening date announcement could come later this week as management evaluates conditions at the resort.

In September, the main lodge at the resort was destroyed by fire and a temporary lodge has been constructed to serve guests for the 2015-2016 season.
