MIAMI VALLEY — The Miami Valley is currently under a heat advisory, but that’s not keeping people from getting their work done.
>> Area cooling centers open due to dangerous heat
Rumpke crews are out during the heat wave to pick up recyclables.
“It can be brutal,” said Ben Rumpke, who was a driver for Rumpke for three years.
He knows one of the most difficult parts of the job when it’s hot comes when sitting the the driver’s seat since the engine is right below them.
“It stays hot about 20 degrees hotter than it is outside,” he said. “To put that in perspective, on a 92-degree day like Tuesday, it’s 112 in the cab.”
As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, crews are coming in two hours earlier than normal at 4 a.m. to limit their time in the heat.
“We want them on the road as early as possible, so that they can get off the road as early as possible,” said Molly Kennedy, Communications Coordinator for Dayton Region Rumpke.
Crews have plenty of water with them and are encouraged to take breaks, but they said what can help make their days easier is for everyone to take their cans out at night and leaving a water bottle or note of appreciation always helps.
We will continue updating this story.
