Heating, electric bills to surge this winter; How you can save some cash

DAYTON — With energy prices expected to hit a 10 year high this winter, many are looking at ways they can save some cash.

Ace Hardware on Wilmington Avenue is already stocking its shelves with winter-prep items.

This winter will be an expensive one.

“The largest factor is the price of the commodity,” Alyssia Oshodi, manager of communications for CenterPoint Energy said.

The National Energy Assistance Directors Association estimates the average heating cost for this year is about $1,200

That’s roughly $177 more per household compared to last year.

Time Walsh has been helping Ace Hardware customers save money on their heating bills for the last 21 years.

Walsh gave a few tips such as using doorstops under your door to stop cold air from coming in or caulking your windows.

“Lowering that thermostat just a couple degrees can help to save on that usage,” Oshodi said.

AES Ohio recommends setting your thermostat at 68 degrees when you’re home and dropping it eight degrees when you’re not.

CenterPoint Energy offer its customers assistance if they find themselves in a financial bind.

“If customers qualify, there’s some various assistance options that they can take advantage of,” Oshodi said.
