Gas leak reported at Kettering Meijer

UPDATE @ 10:26 a.m.:

Firefighters said today’s gas leak was not a result of an ongoing construction project at the Meijer on Wilmington Pike.

Employees were working in a rear storage room when a gas line was accidentally hit, prompting a small leak that firefighters were able to bring under control within 10 minutes, according to firefighters.

Customers and employees were evacuated from a section of the grocery section that was impacted by the situation, but the business remained open.

UPDATE @ 10:19 a.m.:

Our crew on the scene is reporting some firefighters are beginning to leave the store and it appears business is returning to normal.

This is the second time this month firefighters have responded to the store for an issue.

On Sept. 3 firefighters responded after an odor resulting from an overnight remodeling project caused store officials to voluntarily close and evacuate the building while firefighters ventilated the business.

It’s unclear if today’s incident stemmed from the remodeling that has been ongoing at the store, but we are working to get those details from firefighters still on the scene.

FIRST REPORT:

A gas leak was reported at the Wilmington Pike Meijer store in Kettering this morning.

Firefighters responded to the store, which is under renovation, around 9:50 a.m.

Emergency dispatch traffic indicated Vectren was being requested to the scene.

We’re hearing reports there may be evacuations to at least a portion of the store.

We are working to learn more on this report and we’ll update this story as information becomes available.
