Flight plan: Turn Boeing 727 into local classroom

Some STEM classes throughout the region could get very interesting if the Beavercreek City Schools board votes to accept a gift Boeing 727 jet from Federal Express.

The vote set for Monday morning is the first step toward turning the jetliner into a Beavercreek Science, Technology, Engineering and Math classroom for interested schools throughout the region, school district officials said Friday.

The jet is scheduled to land at Dayton International Airport on Nov. 20, where it will take up residence until it is renovated into a classroom. When that’s accomplished, the vehicle will be moved to a Wright State University property.

Project partners with Beavercreek City Schools are the airport, Clark State Community College and Wright State University.

The project will be funded through sponsorships, grants and private donations.

The idea is to train students at the middle school, high school and post-secondary level in aviation and aerospace. The learning needs of elementary students through the region will be targeted as well, district officials said.
