Electric vehicles provide “encouraging” results in latest crash tests

Crash tests for electric vehicles are showing positive safety results as many automakers continue to speed up their manufacturing of E-Powered cars.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently tested several electric vehicles, where multiple vehicles tested earned Top Safety Pick Awards. IIHS President David Harkey called the results “encouraging.”

“These electric vehicles are performing just as well as the internal combustion engine models,” Harkey said.

The Highway Loss Data Institute reported that injury claims for electric vehicles were about 40 percent lower than accidents involving identical gas powered models.

Hackey noted that the weight of the electric vehicles is one of the reasons behind the better performance. Heavier vehicles experience less force and fewer injuries, research showed. E-Powered vehicles weigh more due to their heavy batteries.

“And so that’s good news for consumers. They can have confidence in purchasing an electric vehicle,” Hackey said.

More people may be purchasing E-Powered vehicles in the coming years, as some automakers are planning to shift their fleets almost completely to E-Power in the coming decades.
