As children head back to the classroom in the coming weeks, many of them will be noticing security changes.

NewsCenter7’s Jim Otte investigated what’s being done and why.

Last February, 17 people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Since then, many schools have added new security, including at West Carrollton High School.

West Carrollton Principal Candice Haffner said two full-time school resource officers are being added this year.

“We know what’s out there and what can happen so we’re constantly vigilant on what we do,” she said.

The district is partnering with the police department for the school resource officers.

“We’ve had numerous conversations in the past about instituting the school resource officer program,” said West Carrollton Police Chief Douglas Woodard. “And it’s come down to funding. This year the school district has stepped up and offered to fund a majority of the program.”

The district also has a video security system, exterior doors will be locked and a walkway will be enclosed.

“You need to secure your school buildings. And you need to secure your classrooms,” said security expert Craig Hoschouer. “There’s things we can do without spending money that’s policy driven, training, getting some volunteers, that we can do better to protect the students.”
