Demolition will begin during the first week of February and will last approximately four months, according to Miami County YMCA Executive Director Jim McMaken.

Interior demolition started about three weeks ago.

A parking lot for YMCA members will be built on the site of the old building.

Miami County YMCA estimates that it will be ready by summertime.

McMaken said more than 540 people and businesses made donations to help fund the new parking lot.

The original YMCA Piqua branch was built on High Street and Downing Street in 1892 but was later replaced by a new building in 1962, according to McMaken.

The 1962 building closed in late July 2024 and the new UVMC/Premier Health Branch YMCA opened across the street on Aug. 5.

McMaken said the new building is “continuing a 132-year tradition of having a Y facility in downtown Piqua.”

As previously reported by News Center 7, Miami County received $2 million in October to get rid of old, vacant businesses.

The old YMCA building is on the county’s list to be demolished and replaced.
