No charges in Centerville HS student pedestrian crash

Centerville police said no charges will be pursued against the driver that struck Seth Barnthouse while he was crossing Franklin Street earlier this month.

According to police, Barnthouse was crossing the road improperly.

Police do not expect to pursue any charges against Barnthouse either, officers said.

Seth Barnthouse’s condition has improved to serious condition from critical, according to hospital officials.

Centerville school officials said counselors will be on hand for students needing an outlet to discuss Wednesday’s pedestrian crash.

The teen struck and critically injured while crossing the street near Centerville High School has been identified as Seth Barnthouse, according to police, a sophomore at Centerville High School.

Police said Barnthouse remains in critical, but stable condition, and the biggest concern is the blunt force head trauma.

According to Centerville police Officer John Davis, Barnthouse is on a ventilator and family has asked for no visitors at the hospital, so the medical teams can perform the work needed.

Davis said it could take some time to determine if any charges will be filed against the 45-year-old driver.

INITIAL REPORT (Feb. 17)

A 16-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a vehicle as he was crossing the street at the intersection of East Franklin Street and South Johanna Drive Wednesday afternoon.

Initial reports from emergency dispatch traffic indicated the child may have been exiting a school bus, however police said a school bus was not involved in the incident.

Police said a 45-year-old female driver struck the victim shortly after 3 p.m.

The victim’s condition was not immediately available and police have not yet released any information on whether any charges will be pursued against the driver.
