“The budget reflects what we value,” New state spending bill directs money at local schools

The state’s new spending plan provides a income tax cut and help for the Miami Valley economy, but it also provides more money for local schools. The school funding formula is designed to set up a system that will be constitutional for the first time since the 1990s.

Gov. Mike DeWine called the $74 billion plan signed Thursday morning a “historic step forward” for the state.

“This budget reflect what we value,” DeWine said.

State Rep. Phil Plummer (R-Dayton) said the plan creates a balance between charter schools, vouchers and public schools. Plummer also said the plan makes it more fair to districts and taxpayers.

$2 billion dollars will be directed into education statewide. Money will go into programs to help high schoolers get the certifications they will need to go into manufacturing and other jobs.
