Both directions of the Brent Spence Bridge have reopened to traffic, following a six-week closure caused by a fiery crash and subsequent repairs.

Earlier, Kentucky transportation officials said the bridge was safe for travel and would reopen at some point today. Around 2:30 p.m., the first vehicles began using both directions of the bridge, which connects Interstates 71 and 75 across the Ohio River.

FIRST REPORT
Kentucky transportation officials announced this morning that the Brent Spence Bridge will reopen at some point today, a day ahead of schedule.
Crews are working to restore normal traffic patterns that will allow the bridge to reopen, Gov. Andy Beshear said Tuesday morning.

The bridge, which connects Interstates 71 and 75 across the Ohio River, has been closed since Nov. 11 following a fiery semi-crash. Crews have been working since then to repair damages on the upper and lower decks.
On Monday afternoon, inspectors deemed the bridge to be safe for travel and for the final repair work to begin.
Crews will begin to remove various traffic control devices and temporary signage at midnight on Monday.
