BMV problem affecting local license issuance

If you tried to obtain an Ohio drivers license this week or renew your expiring license in any local deputy registrar's office, you likely were turned away.

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles' computer system crashed when they were attempting a national database update, according to Ohio BMV spokewoman Lindsey Bohrer.

The BMV problem occurred Monday and has affected all deputy registrar offices across the state. "The issues have been hit or miss," said Bohrer. In some cases this week, people have been able to take care of their renewal or be issued a license, but it is sporadic, said Bohrer. The state is working on the problem and hopes to have it fixed soon.

Drivers who have gone in to have their expiring licenses renewed have been issued letters that can be displayed to law enforcement officers if they are pulled over, Bohrer said. "The letter is good for 14 days," said Bohrer, and she expects the problem will be remedied within that time period.

Bohere suggests drivers who have not yet gone in to renew or obtain a license, call the office first to see if the system is working.

The problem has not affected state identification cards or vehicle registrations.
