Beavercreek community comes together to organize special needs prom

BEAVERCREEK — The Beavercreek community pulled together to organize a special needs prom for anyone who wanted to dance the night away on Saturday.

From 6 to 9 p.m., anyone in the community was welcome to the dance held at Quest Gymnastics and Extreme Sports Center in Beavercreek, one of the many businesses that helped make the event happen.

David Brown and his wife Dawn Brown, who have a son with down syndrome, came up with the idea of holding a special needs prom after the Tim Tebow Night to Shine Prom went virtual this year.

David Brown reached out to local businesses throughout the community to ask for help raising money for the event.

“We had over $700 dollars of stuff donated to raffle off, and McAfee Heating and Air stepped up big time and donated $300 dollars towards it,” he said.

Quest Gymnastics and Extreme Sports Center helped by opening its doors and providing a place for the event to happen.

David Brown said that close to 50 people showed up, which is much bigger than he expected considering only 15 people signed up.

“I made sure we had masks for everybody, hand sanitizer, people serving food with gloves on so nobody was just grabbing, and taking all the precautions we can to make it happen,” he said.

Katie Goffe was one of the many people in the community to attend the event, and said she enjoyed being able to dance and have fun with her friends.

“It’s great to have a prom here because we can’t have it at the church we go to because of COVID,” Goffe said.

David Brown expressed his gratitude towards the community coming together to make this event happen.

“It’s a feeling that words can’t even explain. It melts my heart that I didn’t think they were going to be able to have it because of the pandemic, and we made it happen for them,” he said.
