As gas prices are starting to go up once again, diesel fuel has remained high making it difficult for truck drivers.
According to GasBuddy, the average cost for diesel fuel in Ohio is currently $5, which is higher than the national average.

John Douglas, BD Transportation owner, says at $5 a gallon it costs roughly $100,000 per week or $5 million a year to fill up his 70 trucks.
“It’s a struggle right now to try to make all the dollars and cents work,” Douglas said.
Now GasBuddy says prices on all gas types are going up because of refinery and supply chain issues. If Hurricane Ian gets more severe, it can also raise prices.

The National Advancing Convenience and Fuel Retailing website says diesel fuel is high because it tends to be taxed more.
The freight industry has boomed making diesel a necessity, and production costs more due to additional treatments needed to produce diesel.
“It’s just tough on everybody right now. It’s just things are not as fun as they used to be,” Douglas said.
If gas prices do continue to go up, truckers who have to carry tons of cargo are worried and say alternatives like hydrogen or electric just aren’t feasible right now.
