Killed in the crash was Chase Spencer, 35. He died on the scene. Chase Spencer is the son of current Darke County Sheriff Toby Spencer, said Preble County Sheriff Mike Simpson.

“The men and women of the Darke County Sheriff’s Office only wish to express our sympathies to our Sheriff and his family in this time of loss.  The employees of his office will continue to support him in whatever way he needs,” said Chief Deputy Mark Whittaker. “The Darke County Sheriff’s Office also thanks the Preble County Sheriff and his office, as well as the first responders, for the professional handling of this tragic accident.”

Simpson said Chase Spencer was driving a pickup south on 503 when he drove off the right side of the road.

Chase Spencer then over-corrected and drove off the left side of the road, striking a pole and tree, Simpson said.

An autopsy will be conducted today and the crash continues to be under investigation by the Preble County Sheriff’s Office.
