Police arrived and found a male with a gunshot wound to the upper part of his body, according to Sgt. Criegee Coleman.
News Center 7’s John Bedell obtained video that captured the sounds of the gunfire.
Even amid the racket of Dayton city crews sawing concrete Tuesday morning, gunfire can be heard.
“I think I heard ‘pow, pow, pow, pow, pow.’ How many is that? Five or six. Something like that,” Joyce Smith, of Dayton, said.
Smith didn’t want to be on camera, but told News Center 7 that she was walking her dog on the block next to the Dayton VA Campus.
“We got halfway past the circle, Bernard, and stopped and heard these shots, but I thought it was firecrackers. And I’m like, what in the world, firecrackers early in the morning?” Smith said.
Dayton police said other witnesses reported someone walking up to a car on Bernard Court and started shooting.
The man driving started shooting back and was shot at least once.
Two children were in the car with him, but were not hit. Police said the man was getting ready to take the kids to school at the time.
“From what the witnesses said, they ducked down. So somebody has taught them, or they just reacted. They’re safe now,’ Coleman said.
After the gunfire, Dayton police said the car went off the road, crashed through a fence, and then wound up against an AC unit on the side of a house.
News Center 7’s John Bedell talked to three electricians who were on the block.
They were outside their truck working at this house. They said two of the bullets went into their truck and out the windshield.
Medics took the man who was shot to the hospital, in what police described as a serious condition.
Our crews saw a woman who police said was the children’s mother picking them up from the scene.
“I’m just glad that the children were okay. And I hope the family’s gonna be all right, you know?” Smith said.
Police said they are still looking into what led up to the gunfire.
“Praying for the young man that I saw (medics) bring out. So I hope he’s gonna be okay,” Smith said.
So far, Dayton police have not identified a suspect or made any arrests.
Police are asking anyone with information to call 937-333-2677.
