“ATD is pleased to award the 2023 Leah Meyer Austin Award to Sinclair Community College, an institution whose consistent and strategic commitment to student success has led to substantive and equitable improvements in outcomes — improvements that have been sustained even following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said an ATD spokesperson.

To be eligible for the award, Sinclair had to meet a number of criteria, including being a part of the ATD network for three years, and met one of the following data criteria:

  • Four-year improvement in the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data (IPEDS) three-year graduation rate of at least three percentage points (first-time. full-time students)
  • Four-year improvement in the National Student Clearinghouse three-year graduation rate of at least three percentage points (first time ever in college, degree-seeking, both full-time and part-time)
  • Six-year transfer-out bachelor’s degree completion rate at or above the national level
  • Selection as one of the top 150 colleges in the competition for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence

Over the past four years, Sinclair has increased from completion rating for Black students from 15 percent to 22 percent. For students over the age of 24, the completion rate increased from 26 percent to 47 percent, almost doubling.

“This honor reflects years of effort to maximize equity and student success. From comprehensive high-level policy reviews to individual student-advisor conversations, Sinclair has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring that all students achieve their goals,” said Dr. Steven L. Johnson, President of Sinclair Community College.

The award has been given since 2008 to colleges showing achievement, continuous culture, equity, and others. Sinclair is the 21st college to receive this award.
