Decoration sales higher than ever as Halloween approaches amid COVID-19 pandemic, says one local store owner

As many Ohio families reconsider Halloween plans and look ahead to the safest options for trick-or-treating this weekend amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a popular Halloween shop says it’s clear families are still finding ways to celebrate.

At Foy’s Costume Store in Fairborn, owner Mike Foy said sales, while down a bit from 2019, have not dropped by much.

"We’re selling a lot of items. A lot of people are dressing up, Foy said. “I think a lot of them aren’t even going to parties, they want to say home to dress up and have fun.”

Foy added, the store has sold more Halloween decorations than ever before, leading him to believe many families are focusing more on home decorations and family events than leaving the house to trick-or-treat, compared with past years.

While at the store, News Center 7 ran into Kelly Wolfe, from Xenia, shopping for costumes with her six-year-old son, planning to go as “Mario.” Wolf said her family is modifying its plans, but still wants to celebrate the holiday.

“Very important, especially with (my son) being six this year,” she said. “He couldn’t wait. So we are just trying to make it as fun as possible. And we’re all dressing up with him.” Her family plans to celebrate with a small group of family and friends.

This comes as Governor Mike DeWine, Tuesday, again urged Ohioans to avoid large gatherings for Halloween…and for holidays in November and December, too…amid a spike in coronavirus he said is largely a result of gatherings of people.

“The community spread endangers our schools, our nursing homes, and our hospitals,” DeWine said.

Still, as a difficult year continues, Foy said he’s glad to see customers making the best of Halloween…and finding a way to enjoy themselves.

“People are having fun, and you can’t take all the fun out of everything,” he said. “And I do believe people are being safe. I hope.”
