A former Miami County Communication Center dispatch supervisor was found guilty of theft from a Covington youth sports organization was sentenced Monday, July 6, to three years of probation and restitution of $3,580.
Jack L. Staudt, 41, of Covington was found guilty May 21 by Judge Christopher Gee, who heard testimony in the case without a jury earlier that week in county Common Pleas Court.
Staudt was accused of felony theft for allegedly stealing more than $3,000 from the Covington Little Buccs youth football and cheerleading organization while serving as the organization treasurer in 2013.
Other Little Buccs officers testified Staudt failed to attend several monthly board meetings and failed to provide written financial statements to the board.
After several unsuccessful attempts to contact Staudt about finances, one officer went to the village police, asking for help in obtaining organization financial records. Records were obtained but a receipt book never was located, according to the testimony.
In his testimony, Staudt said he reluctantly took the treasurer’s job and denied taking any money. He said the group was disorganized and money went through several hands.
Staudt declined the opportunity to comment before hearing his sentence Monday.
Defense lawyer Steve King said Staudt had “virtually nothing” on his record beyond old traffic violations. King said Staudt had no information to dispute the amount of restitution, adding “We believe it is fair.”
Assistant Prosecutor Janna Parker said she had worked with the Little Buccs leaders throughout the case. “They are happy to put this case behind them,” she said. The organization’s interest has been “making the organization whole again,” Parker said.
King and Parker agreed Staudt qualified for mandatory community control under state law.
Gee added conditions to Staudt’s community control including following a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew and paying court costs, a monthly supervision fee and the restitution.
“I hope you take all of this very seriously,” Gee said.
