Death of boy, 2, found in Clayton pool accidental, coroner says

CLAYTON — UPDATE @ 6:31 p.m. (Oct. 6): The death of 2-year-old Kameron Vanatta of Clayton, found in backyard swimming pool Saturday afternoon, is considered accidental, according to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office.

The boy’s death was caused by brain damage due to lack of oxygen to his brain, triggered by fresh water drowning, according to a statement from the coroner’s office issued Thursday. Kameron was pronounced dead at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday at Dayton Children’s Hospital, according to a coroner’s investigator.

A Clayton police detective has said the boy’s mother found him in the pool and that the boy had been in the water for “some minutes.” According to the initial police report, the boy is said to have fallen into the pool at the residence in the 5300 block of Hillgrove Avenue. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital first, then to Dayton Children’s.
