Restarting Ohio: Education Xenia Community Schools officials release back-to-school plan

XENIA — Xenia Community Schools officials on Monday released to families their plan to reopen for the 2020-21 school year.

“Since closing our buildings in March, we have been working toward a safe and workable plan to responsibly reopen school and educate our students,” Superintendent Gabe Lofton said in a prepared statement. “While there are no perfect solutions for our current situation, I believe that we have come up with a plan that takes into account various needs of our families, while still prioritizing the safety and well-being of students and staff.”

The plan meets the “common agreements” made with all Greene County schools, as well as meeting state guidelines and taking into account feedback received from the community in a parent survey taken in June. The plan details options for various scenarios. Right now, Xenia Community Schools plan will follow the 2020-21 academic calendar and open on Plan A.

PLAN A: In the event schools are permitted to open and operate with enhanced safety protocols, parents must choose one of two tracks by Aug. 1:

  • Option A1 – In School Learning (PreK-12): Students will attend school in the building. Parents should understand there is a level of risk that is unavoidable.

 All students to attend five (5) days per week in their regular classroom.

 Enhanced safety protocols in place that include additional cleaning and social distancing measures.

 Per state guidelines, masks will be required for staff and volunteers and strongly encouraged for students.

  • Option A2 – Remote Learning (K-12): Student will opt to participate in remote learning for the semester.

 Students in grades K-2 will learn through a mix of online learning services as directed by XCS staff.

 Students in grades 3-12 will utilize a self-paced online learning platform.

 Students at all age levels will have a teacher to facilitate online learning and answer questions. Students may not be assigned to a teacher from their regular building/grade level.

The opt-in process for remote learning opened Monday. Applications must be submitted by Aug. 1. When deciding which track is the best fit for their family, it is important to remember students must choose one option for the entire semester and may NOT switch between In-School and Remote Learning unless a documented life change occurs.

PLAN B: In the event schools are not permitted to remain open or closure determined in cooperation with local and state public health officials, more information will be shared. For that plan:

 All school buildings will remain CLOSED to students.

 Learning will follow the 2020-21 academic calendar.

 All K-12 students to participate in remote learning facilitated by their regular teacher(s). Note this differs from the optional remote learning plan.
