Miami Valley seeing warmer temperatures this winter, so far

MIAMI VALLEY — After hitting the 70 degree mark last week, we have another warmer stretch of weather on the way this coming week.

>>ODOT: Winter milder than last year, so far

This winter has been considerably milder than last year, according to social media post by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Robert Gauthreaux says it has been unusually warm to start the year.

After seeing the ODOT social media post, he started digging into the data, which included the daily average temperatures.

Sunday’s high temperature was 58 degrees and the low was 39 degrees.

If you add these two together and divide by two, Sunday’s daily average was 48.5 degrees.

>>Cloudy overnight; Another mild stretch ahead with showers midweek

In climatological research, winter starts at the beginning of December and ends at the end of February.

Robert calculated the average temperature every day from December 1 to February 18 to get the average winter temperature of 36.26 degrees so far.

From there, compare this winter with every winter on record to this point at Dayton International Airport and you will find that so far, this winter has been the third mildest on record.

There are less than 10 days left in the month of February and Robert says this will likely fluctuate but certainly has been warm.

Why is that exactly?

Robert says it’s likely due to several climatological patterns such as La Nina, which brings Ohio a warmer than average winter.

As far as this week is concerned, we can expected another mild one with some showers.
