Great weekend expected for viewing fall colors as leaves near their peak in the region

Even though we have had a lack of beneficial rainfall these past few weeks, color change is really emerging in the Miami Valley! The sunny days and cool mornings over the past few weeks are also allowing for some very vibrant colors as leaves stop producing chlorophyll and their true colors emerge.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ latest fall color report shows that all of the state parks and nature preserves are experiencing “near peak” fall color change and Hueston Woods and Indian Lake are both peaking so get outside and enjoy!

The windy weather we will see through the weekend will likely start taking the leaves down along the highway and in our neighborhoods. Those trees are usually a little further ahead of the trees at parks and forests. The reasons trees lose their leaves is because as the days get shorter and nights get longer, trees create an abscission layer between the leaf and stem so they can shed their leaves and save energy through the winter.
