Meteor shower and International Space Station visible tonight

The Draconid meteor shower will peak this week. And with clear and dry skies in the forecast for the Miami Valley, it will be even easier to get outside and look for some shooting stars.

The Draconid meteor shower is named from the radiant point of this shower, the constellation Draco the Dragon. The shower is active October 6-10 with a peak on October 7.

This week, you will want to get outside right at nightfall and look to the northwestern sky. It gets dark around 8 p.m. and the moon rises a little later each night. On October 7, the bright moon will rise around 10:35 p.m. so get outside and look earlier in the evening before the sky gets brighter.

>>Special Harvest Moon to start October

It will be chilly this week, so bundle up, and find a spot outside away from city lights. Give your eyes about 10-20 minutes to adjust.

BONUS: The International Space Station will also have a great flyover Wednesday night! Head outside around 7:49 p.m. and look to the west/northwestern sky. The ISS will be visible for about five minutes and will be 79 degrees above the horizon which is pretty high in the sky! We will be getting dark at that point so you should be able to see it.

Let us know if you see a shooting star this week!
