Back-to-School Science: Elephant Toothpaste

DAYTON — Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini is bringing you some fun science experiments to get your kids ready to head back to school! She teamed up with the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery to try different experiments that helps to teach your kids about chemical reactions and even heat waves.

Throughout the year, Boonshoft hosts kids in their Science Theater to try out fun science presentations. Elephant toothpaste is one interactive experiment they show in their Science Theater!

Zontini put on her googles and lab coat to help Jordan Utterback, Program Manager at Boonshoft with this fun experiment.

If you want to try this out at home. Here are some steps to follow!

Supplies:

  • 16-oz plastic soda bottle
  • 1/2 cup 20-volume hydrogen peroxide (you can get this at your local beauty supply store)
  • 1 Tablespoon of dry yeast
  • 3 Tablespoons of warm water
  • Liquid dishwashing soap
  • Food coloring (any color you want!)
  • Small cup
  • Safety goggles
  • A funnel
  • An adult to help you!

What to Do:

1. Grab your adult and out on your goggles. You will want to do this experiment on a washable surface or on a tray.

2. Take your plastic bottle and add about 8 drops of the food coloring you like the best.

3. Mix in about 1 tablespoon of the dish soap and swish it around in the plastic bottle.

4. In your small cup, combine the warm water and the yeast together. Mix the two for about 30 seconds.

5. Finally, pour the yeast/water mixture into the bottle (use your funnel) and watch the “toothpaste” form!
