Dayton beats Miami to begin the ESPN Events Invitational

The Flyers shoot 59 percent from the field

Orlando, FL — The Dayton Flyers got contributions from several players in a 76-60 win over the Miami Hurricanes on Thursday afternoon to open play in the 2021 ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando, FL. Daron Holmes II led UD with 15 points. Malachi Smith had 14 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Elijah Weaver also scored 14 points and Mustapha Amzil added 11. The Flyers shot 59 percent (27-46) from the field and held Miami to 38 percent shooting for the game. Dayton improves to 2-3 overall this season.

The game was tied at 13-13 following Toumani Camara’s layup at the 10:40 mark of the first half. Dayton took the lead for good, 16-13, after R.J. Blakney’s three-pointer and Malachi Smith made back-to-back baskets to increase it to 20-13. Mustapha Amzil scored five straight points to cap a 16-5 scoring run to give UD a 29-17 advantage. The Hurricanes cut it to 30-21 but Holmes’ three-point play and Amzil’s trey put the Flyers ahead, 36-25, at the break.

Miami scored six unanswered points to open the second half to cut Dayton’s lead to 36-31. Malachi Smith’s layup and two threes by Elijah Weaver extended the lead to 44-31. The Hurricanes got within 12, 53-41, with under ten minutes to play but Smith’s three-point play and two three-pointers by Weaver made the score, 62-44 in UD’s favor and they never looked back.

Dayton moves on to the semifinals of the ESPN Events Invitational and will play Kansas on Friday afternoon. Pre-game coverage starts at 12:30, tip-off is at 1:30 pm.
