Woman found dead in wrecked SUV a month after reported missing

SUMTER COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia woman was found dead in her car more than a month after she was reported missing.

The body of Rosa Welch, 30, was recovered Monday night in Americus, Georgia, after a passerby spotted Welch’s vehicle about 100 yards from a road and called police, WSB-TV reported.

The 30-year-old woman had been reported missing on July 6. Law enforcement officers believe that was the day Welch ran off the road and hit a tree.

Her vehicle was not visible from the road. Searchers on the ground and in a plane also hadn’t found the SUV, The Associated Press reported.

“I was still trying to have faith that she was alive,” Tiffany Hogg, Welch’s sister, told WALB-TV. “It’s devastating, [because] like I said, she was my best friend, and now I don’t have her ... Now we’re waiting to find out when we can plan her funeral.”

An investigation into what may have caused Welch’s accident is underway and officials are waiting for toxicology results. Officials do not believe Welch was impaired or that there was any foul play.
