SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. — Officers shot and killed a suspect accused of stabbing two officers at an apartment complex on Long Island.
Officers with the Suffolk County Police Department were called to a condominium complex on Friday evening for a report of a man threatening a neighbor with a fire extinguisher, according to WNBC.
A social worker doing a wellness check on residents at the apartment complex called 911, WABC reported.
When officers arrived at the scene, one of the residents continued to act violently, police said. The resident is accused of pulling out a “Rambo-style” butcher knife and attacking the officers, WNBC reported.
Officers responded by opening fire, which killed the suspect, WPIX reported. The suspect’s name was not released.
Two officers suffered stab wounds, according to WABC. One was flown to a hospital, while the other was driven to a hospital by ambulance.
Noel DiGerolamo, president of the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association, said in a statement to WPIX, “We ask that all Long Islanders keep our officers in their thoughts and prayers, and God willing, they will make a full recovery from the horrific incident that took place earlier today.”
Neighbors described previous issues with the resident involved in the altercation with the police.
“He’s stalked a couple of girls; girls have made complaints,” Maria Daume told WABC. “I know my neighbor was just one of the people who got into a confrontation with him, I got into a verbal confrontation with him. That’s just the people that I know.”
Another resident, Dina Connor, told WABC that the resident made her feel uncomfortable and would catcall her.
A third officer, who had not been stabbed, was treated for minor injuries, WNBC reported.
