NEW YORK — A 4-year-old boy survived a fall from a sixth-floor window at a New York City Housing Authority complex in the Bronx.
The incident happened Tuesday around noon, WABC reported.
The child is believed to have slipped out a gap between the air conditioner and window frame, according to WABC. That area of the window had no bars, according to witnesses. Window bars are required if minors 10 years or younger live in a unit, but bars are not required next to air conditioner units, according to WNBC. The child’s mother was home at the time of the incident, neighbors told WABC.
The child sustained leg and head injuries and was conscious when first responders arrived, WABC reported. Witnesses told WNBC that the boy landed in a patch of grass, which may have softened his blow and prevented more significant injuries. He was taken to the hospital by the New York Police Department and listed in stable condition.
The New York Police Department shared a video on social media showing the coordinated effort involved to assess the child and transport him to the hospital.

The incident is under investigation. The housing authority released the following statement to WNBC: “NYCHA is investigating this unfortunate incident and will work with the family to make sure that they have the services they need. Upon initial review, window guards are present throughout the apartment where required and were last checked in February 2022, and there are no repair work orders on record for the air conditioners present in the residence.”
