One in five Americans have been infected with COVID-19, according to statistics

One in every five Americans have contracted the COVID-19 virus, according to statistics from Johns Hopkins University.

As of Wednesday, at least 67,617,789 cases have been diagnosed in the U.S. since January 2020, and m ore than 854,000 people have died.

The U.S. is currently averaging 776,891 new cases and 1,796 deaths per day.

California leads the country in COVID cases per state, with greater than 6.9 million cases diagnosed. Texas is next with 5.5 million cases and Florida is third with just greater than 5 million cases.

Vermont had the fewest reported cases, with 90,668.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared SARS-CoV-2, or COVID-19, a pandemic. The announcement came as reports of a lethal virus that appeared to come out of Wuhan, China, was spreading around the world.

On Dec. 10, 2020, vaccine advisers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration voted to recommend the agency grant emergency use authorization to Pfizer and BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine, and four days later, the FDA authorized a second coronavirus vaccine made by Moderna for emergency use.

Since December of 2020, 64% of the U.S. population has been fully vaccinated.
